Florida No. 1 In Collegiate Baseball Poll

Florida (16-0) is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Gators are off to their best start in school history and are the only NCAA Division I team that is undefeated. During the past week, Florida beat Florida Atlantic, Florida A&M and then swept a 3-game series from South Florida. Florida has hit 21 homers and 31 doubles over its first 16 games. The defense has only committed 10 errors while the pitching staff has a 2.43 ERA and has struck out 172 batters with 45 walks.

UCLA, ranked No. 1 the previous two weeks, slipped to third after losing twice last week to U.C. Santa Barbara and Texas Christian. The Bruins also had quality wins against Vanderbilt and Southern California.

Poll Notes: Outside of Florida, several other teams have winning streaks, including Mississippi (14),  Texas Tech. (12), Wichita St. (12) Auburn (8) and U.C. Santa Barbara (8).

In key series over the past weekend, Virginia took two of three at home against N.C. State, Pepperdine took two of three at home against Michigan, Notre Dame swept a 3-game series at North Carolina (first conference road sweep since 2015 for Irish), Duke won two of three at home against Florida St., Louisville took two of three at Wake Forest and U.C. Santa Barbara swept a 3-game series at Oregon St.

Three teams fell out of the top 30 in North Carolina (2-3 last week), Texas Christian (1-3) and Michigan (2-3). New to the poll is Virginia (12-4 overall), Notre Dame (10-2) and Wichita St. (13-2).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.
