One final run
The Florida State Seminoles will make their 23rd College World Series appearance in program history after defeating the LSU Tigers 5-4 in extra innings. FSU was one of the last four teams in the NCAA Tournament less than two weeks ago. The trip will be FSU’s Mike Martin's 17th trip taking the Seminoles to the College World Series in his 40 years atop the program. This is Martin’s final season as the head coach for the Seminole baseball program.
Needing one more win to finish off the LSU Tigers and advance to the College World Series, the Florida State baseball team squandered a 4-1 lead in the late innings.
Enter Drew Mendoza. The Seminoles' junior third baseman came through in the 12th inning of a stalemate with a single to right field off LSU pitcher Devin Fontenot that brought in shortstop Mike Salvatore to score. The walk-off hit gave the Seminoles (41-21) a 5-4 win over the Tigers (40-26) and completed a sweep through the Baton Rouge Super Regional in front of 11,713 fans at LSU's Alex Box Stadium.
Against all odds, this gives FSU head coach Mike Martin one last shot at winning it all during his "One Last Run." They did it in an environment widely known for its tough atmosphere and difficulty to win in as the road team come the postseason. It drops LSU's home record in the NCAA Tournament to 103-25 (.805). It's just LSU's third time dropping a super regional at home in 11 times hosting one since the format was introduced in 1999.
On a brink of missing the post season two weeks ago, FSU is now one of eight teams that will square off at the College World Series. What a special finish it would be for Martin if the Seminole are able to close out the season as NCAA Champions.
